Where AI helps architectural practice, where it gets in the way, and why structured context matters more than generating endless options.
Generating another option is easy. Checking it against the Approved Documents, the brief, and last week's issue is the work.
Generic chat tools guess. They do not know which revision you issued, which clause applies to that building, or what your practice already decided on a similar job. In UK construction that gap is not a novelty. It is a liability.
The useful pattern is retrieval: search the source, then explain. That is why we built Approved Documents Search with links back to the regulations, and a practice knowledge base that stays on documents you approve.
What to ask of a tool
- Can you open the clause or file it used?
- Does it know this job, or only the public internet?
- Who is responsible for the answer when it is wrong?
AI can lower the cost of search and first drafts. It cannot replace the architect who signs the drawing. If a tool cannot show its source, treat it as a sketch, not evidence.
